2) Install Epic ~300CID motor.

They made gobs of torque though.

Mine makes about 320 to the tires. Figure 375-380 at the flywheel. Maybe more....

I've posted this pic before. I took it about 2 months ago.

And just imagine if Ford was insane enough to put the 351 Windsor in the Cougar/Thunderbird.

Actually, don't. That will hurt. A lot.

That's...not stock though. 270lb-ft of twist from the factory, right?

Could be worse. Could be an Oldsmobile Diesel.

The 4.6 liter v8 from my 96 Thunderbird only managed to squeeze out another 50 or so. But as stated before, plenty of torque. Damn, I miss that car.

It's so crazy how far technology has come. Even my car, which is now six-years-old and old tech by today's standards, makes 156 whp from a 2.3 liter four-cylinder. And now, look at what Ford is doing with their own EcoBoost fours and sixes. Crazy.

Yup. Car feels quicker than what it should in stock form all things considered. Looking at other sedans from the same time period you'll see the power is on par with other cars it competed against for sales. My buddy Dave has one bone stock with the most beautiful blue leather interior I've ever seen in one of these. I had a 1978 Olds with the Olds 350. 170 HP in stock form. Less torque than the 5.0 in a slightly heavier car with an even floatier (is that a word?) suspension.

Yep. My 1.8L I4 from 2003 makes 170hp. Half the cylinders, 36% the displacement, 20 more horsepower. Incredible.

Easier and cheaper just to do a head, cam, and intake swap. Throw some gears and a higher stall torque converter in the mix and laugh maniacally when stomping the go pedal.

Shhh. Don't tell anyone. If you leak the secret it cuts into my parts car inventory.

The suspension was floatier definitely not "grounded to the ground"

yea but you can fix that for very very little money.

maybe spend 500 bucks on parts and BOOM fast car that looks like it should be an old person car.

And we LOVE sleepers.

I owned a '75 Vette with the L48 350.

165 hp @ 3800 RPM.

Driving the car was like arguing with a 4 year old.

"Just.. just go... please. Just...GO"

" NO . I DON'T WANNA. You can't make me."

Also, I just realized that the car you pictured is a 20th Anniversary Edition. They're starting to appreciate in value. Average price is around $4K and climbing steadily as compared to last year.

In a 1989, a 1.8l in a Golf made almost as much horsepower (140 for the GTI 16s)
